Wayne Township is located in the heart of Passaic County on 25 square miles, less than twenty miles from midtown Manhattan. A balanced suburban community, Wayne offers many lakeside neighborhoods, recreational facilities, museums, an exceptional public school system, shopping and business centers. It is also home to William Paterson University.
High Mountain Park Preserve in Wayne is a protected area of the Preakness Range of the Watchung Mountains. It comprises 1,153 acres of woodlands and wetlands and is one of the largest tracts of conserved land in northern New Jersey. The preserve has 11.5 miles of hiking trails with panoramic vistas including stunning views from High Mountain's summit, where you can see New York City and much of northern New Jersey.
Communities located partially or completely within the township include Barbours Mills, Barbours Pond, Lower Preakness, Mountain View, Packanack Lake, Pines Lake, Point View, Pompton Falls, Preakness and Two Bridges. Wayne also has a number of lakes, with distinct communities and neighborhoods located around them. These include Packanack Lake, Pines Lake, Lions Head Lake, Tom's Lake and Pompton Lake (half of which is in Wayne). The Passaic River also flows through a portion of Wayne.
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 54,717 people and 19,127 households in the township.
The Wayne Public Schools has 14 schools serving students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, including 9 elementary, 3 middle and 2 high schools.
