The Borough of Hopatcong is a residential community located on Lake Hopatcong, the largest body of water in New Jersey.
The borough encompasses an area of 12 square miles, and has a population of approximately 15,000 people, making it the third largest municipality in Sussex County. Visitors come from all over the state to enjoy the recreational activities, excellent restaurants, full-service marinas and old country charm. Many people who visit end up falling in love with the lake, buying a home, and staying a lifetime.
Communities located partially or completely within the borough include Bear Pond, Byram Cove, Cow Tongue Point, Davis Cove, Glasser, Hendersons Cove, Roseville, Sharps Rock and Sperry Springs.
From the late 1800s through the Great Depression, Lake Hopatcong was a ritzy resort area that attracted the well-to-do to its shores to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere away from the bustling city life of those times. Although it has undergone a transition from recreational resort to a serene residential community, Lake Hopatcong remains a popular attraction for boating and outdoor enthusiasts.
Though the Lake is a major draw to living in Hopatcong, the community has much more to offer its residents--weekly events, farmers markets, daytime activities, night life, hiking trails, easy access to major highways, employment opportunities, small and large businesses, and new construction.
Most of Hopatcong’s residents own their homes and live in the borough year round.
Students in public school for kindergarten through twelfth grade are served by the Hopatcong Borough Schools in its five schools.
